Core Curriculum:
Music 7 (465)
Grade 7
This course is designed to develop the students’ appreciation of music by discovering the basic
elements and theory behind music. Students will develop an understanding rhythm, pitch,
dynamics and tonal color while learning the basics of reading musical notation. Concepts from
Music 7 are reinforced during Junior Chorus.
Music 8 (466)
Grade 8
This course is designed to enhance the students’ understanding and appreciation of music by
building upon the basics learned in Music 7. Students will explore rhythm and meter using
poetry and discover the basics of harmony through chord structure. This will culminate in the
song writing projects during the second semester. Concepts from Music 8 are likewise
reinforced during Junior Chorus rehearsals.
Discovery of Music (412)
Grade 9
Credits: 1.0
This semester long course introduces freshman to music as art and not just entertainment by
enlightening the students’ perception of the music and to develop their ability in listening to
music as opposed to just hearing music. Students learn and subsequently demonstrate this
difference after listening to a wide range of music. Once accomplished, students move into the
Colonial American period and the role music played through the Revolutionary War and the War
of 1812 culminating in a web quest about the US National anthem.
Humanities Music (443)

Credits: 3.0
Taught in tandem with Humanities Art and Humanities English, this year long course enhances
the students’ perception of music as art and not just entertainment by examining the role and
development of music as it pertains to the other “arts” throughout history and to discover that
music is a form of communication for the human race. Seniors will compare the musical styles
through the historical periods beginning with Gregorian Chant (circa. 600 AD), listening to
highlights from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, 20th
Century and Contemporary eras.
